BE will introduce its innovative roll cart at NPE 2006. The battery-operated cart has wireless control that is integrated with BE winders. One cart can remove rolls from both front-to-front winders. The cart at the show can handle 40-inch diameter rolls with 64-inch layflat. The 3000lb-capacity cart is equipped with 23-inch scissor lift, a tilt table and built-in roll weighing. The associated core shaft support stand eliminates operator handling of the shaft and includes core shaft deflation and inflation. For rolls of this size it will take 2.5 minutes to unload a roll, load a new shaft, and return home or continue to the facing winder. The BE roll cart is just what operators need—it is safe, convenient and easy to operate.
SCD®-3 makes multilayer film possible
On display at NPE 2006 will be a 9-layer SCD®-3.The BE SCD® made it possible to coextrude 7-10 layer blown film and as a result BE has more multilayer lines operating around the world than any other equipment manufacturer. Multilayer coextruded blown film is sought for its superior properties such as gas and aroma barrier, chemical resistance, tensile strength, optics, shrink, puncture resistance, stretch, formability, hot tack strength, seal temperature range, peelability, printability and consistent gauge.
BE's innovative SCD®-3, streamlined coextrusion die is a stackable modular system which processes each layer of film at its own ideal temperature. The die passage on the face of the die plate is streamlined to ensure the molten polymer does not hang up and/or degrade. Each layer holds only a small volume of molten polymer. Because of the short residence time in the module, polymer flushing and changeovers are fast— saving time, materials and money.
With the SCD®-3 processors can design film structures to maximize the desired properties (usually barrier) in thin layers without compromising the film but using less material. Multilayer coextruders around the world recognize that the SCD® die allows them to add value to their film by improving the properties. They have independent control of the layers, for example, gloss on the skin and high tensile strength in the core. The SCD® delivers the versatility to run a wide variety of materials to produce many different film structures — the more layers the greater the flexibility. The separation of materials gives superior barrier, flex cracking resistance and thermoformability.
AquaFrost® film samples show the clear choice in blown film
By using the SCD®-3 in the AquaFrost® configuration, processors can make exceptionally clear film. This water-quenched downward blown film process outputs at rates comparable to cast film and without scrap. The film has all the properties expected from multilayer barrier film in addition to unmatched clarity. AquaFrost® film is soft, supple and amorphous. It thermoforms at low temperatures. At the BE booth at NPE samples of blown film will demonstrate the Clear Choice in blown film. You have to see it and feel it to believe it is blown film.
ITALYCS®-4 Control System monitors and controls line parameters
BE proprietary control system provides advanced control for 3-10 layer extrusion lines. The program makes operating a coextrusion line almost as easy as running a monolayer line. With ITALYCS®-4 operators can monitor all important line parameters including temperature, pressure, extruder speed, specific output, film width, thickness, extruder throughput, blend throughput and line speed. Operators can adjust set points for temperature, film width, layer thickness, total thickness and line speed; examine historical information; plus save and load recipes of set points. At the BE booth at NPE visitors will be able to see real time demo of the program.
New secondary nip provides the necessary tension with fewer rollers
BE secondary nip provides tension to help track the web consistently from the primary nip down to the winding system. The new secondary has fewer rollers to reduce the film wrap angles to eliminate wrinkle formation and ensure roll integrity especially for extensible films such as LLDPE, mLLDPE. The secondary nip can operate as a slitting station for various film structure configurations such as: center folded film, center-slit film, j-sheet film and single wound sheeting. Performing these functions under tension helps maintain cut slit quality. The secondary nip provides the required tension to bring the web to the winders allowing the winding station to run at a reduced tension level while building a roll.
Center turret winder builds rolls to operator-specified variables
BE face-to-face, back-to-back or stacked turret winder configurations build rolls for specific applications – large or small, soft or hard. With BE winders, operators have the tools and the flexibility to meet their needs.
The large colour touch screen has an icon-based menu that is integrated with BE ITALYCS®-4 control system. The short threading path reduces drag and makes threading easy. The low inertia drives provide the necessary speed control for large rolls. The taper tension control slowly eases winding tensions as the roll diameter builds to avoid starring, knotting, buckling or excessive winding tension that creates secondary processing issues. Soft, low durometer neoprene surface of lay-on absorbs impact at high spots to avoid bruising of film and gives even pressure across the roll. Forward/Reverse flying knives cutover and tapeless web transfer assist in maintaining roll start up. For softer rolls, gap mode operation eliminates the nip pressure.
The carriage design maintains gap to ensure accurate roll geometry and alignment with consistent gap. Fiber optic beam sensor steps the carriage in micro steps as roll builds. Optional lay-on in turret maintains roll that engages during roll cutovers helps curtail web telescoping during the index cycle for automatic web transfer of light mil high slip webs. BE turret winders provide robust, positive positioning for next roll. If troubleshooting is necessary, BE access the system by modem and ITALYCS®-4.
Operator safety is critically important. With this is mind, BE winders include a presence sensing device to warn operators of a danger zone during normal winding. If someone enters the danger zone during the cutover sequence the presence sensing device stops the sequence to cycle and all hazardous motions such as chuck open, close, or cutover. Pull cords, E-stops and a warning beacon are in place to protect the operators.
BE Overview
Since 1973 BE has been manufacturing blown film equipment for the flexible packaging industry. It has installations around the world. At the heart of BE blown film system is the innovative SCD® die. This stackable modular die enabled the production of 7-10 layer blown film. Throughout its history, BE technology is always on the crest of the wave of innovation. The next wave of technology includes AquaFrost®, a downward blown, water-quenched blown film process that produces exceptionally clear film. AquaFrost® uses an AquaRing as a cooling medium and conventional blown film components turned upside down-including the SCD®-3. BE's ITALYCS® control system, and I-Flex® family of gauge control systems are trademarks of BE.
